Planning Your Renovation in 2023
If you’re visiting this site, it’s safe to say you aren’t completely happy with your house. Maybe it’s the look, maybe it’s the layout, regardless you obviously want to make some changes. If you choose to move forward with professional help, we are probably going to have similar questions (what do you like and dislike about what you have, what look are you going for, and of course – what’s the budget). Below are some ways to help make the planning process a little easier.
Behaviour Study to Identify & Prioritize Scope:
It’s time to identify what is, and what is not working in your space. Take time to acknowledge and write down things that you find frustrating (ugh, I always run into the side of the table, the sink is so far away from the stove, etc) and adversely, things that you like (the carpet is so soft, the tile is really easy to clean, and so on). It might feel weird when you first start tuning into these things, but clearly identifying the pros and the cons will be super helpful later in the project.
Inspiration:
When you reach out to a professional, they are going to want an idea of your style. It’s time to start collecting ideas. You can do this with magazines, a Pinterest board, Instagram collection, album on your phone – whatever you find easiest to use (and share). Make sure to include notes with the images you save (e.g. love the décor but ew to the tile, dream sink, etc). Articulating how you want a space to look can be very challenging with words alone. This is the most efficient way to communicate your style preferences clearly.
Timeline & Budget Expectations:
Labor shortages, lockdowns, factory shut downs and other Covid related issues have caused extended lead times and increased costs. This isn’t intended to scare you off, but it is best to start with a realistic timeline, budget & scope expectations to avoid major disappointment later. Be prepared to have these difficult conversations with your designer or contractor early in the game and make sure you find someone that you trust so you can be honest about these items.
Regardless of how you want to proceed, hopefully this can help make the process a little easier. 1288 Design Company Inc wishes you the best of luck in this exciting Journey!
